A great day with a great friend

I took a little bit of time off between jobs and headed back east for a bit.  I went home for a bit and then headed up to Cambridge to see some people.  Brian Gault and I took a brief jaunt up to his place in York, Maine to enjoy re-connect in an old place that we have spent a lot of time together.  Our families have been heading up to Maine throughout our youth.  Although, we dont get up there much, Maine still maintains a lot of great memories for the Gulottas and Gaults.  Ironically, on this trip it was just the two Brians.  We managed to have a great day…surfing on Long Sands beach, followed by bocce on York Harbor Beah and then a lobster bake.  Below are the pictures.

Donner Pass & the Benson Hut

About 5 years ago, 8 of my close friends and I did a hut trip from Snowbowl in Tahoe to Squaw.  We stayed at the Benson Hut and then the Bradley Hut.  It was one of the most fun trips because we were all coming off of epic ski seasons from different parts of the west.  This year, I went back to the Benson Hut.  It was completely covered in snow again.  So, it makes it like a dungeon inside because there is no light.  However, we had a great time and way better snow this time.  So, we were able to get some decent turns in and then return back to the cars in one piece…making it an amazing California weekend jaunt.  Some pics are attached.

Yosemite Ski Trip

14 people from the Bay area ventured to Yosemite for the holiday weekend.  We were trying to make it to the Ostrander Hut for 3 days of skiing and two nights of ruggedness.  A big storm changed our plans.  We were snowed in and snowed out.  We were snowed into the Badger Pass Lodge for one night and snowed out of the Ostrander hut.  It was actually pretty cool because it was something that will never happen again.  No resort would allow people to sleep in their lodge and use their kitchen (they let us cook their food and use the kitchen if we fed the employees that had worked through the night to maintain the snow).  But we were literally snowed in and unable to get to our cars or down the hill.

For the second night, we made a group decision to head toward Glacier point and stay in the lodge there, vs. a challenging approach to Ostrander.  We skinned out to Glacier point.  It was about 10 miles and it took most of the day.  Upon arrival, there was some clouds around Yosemite Valley.  So, it was tough to see Half Dome.  But it would soon appear.  I rarely use the word spectacular (because my Dad over used it too much when I was a kid), but the view from our hut at Glacier Point was spectacular.  We enjoyed an evening of fun with the group.  It’s pretty magical how entertaining a group of people can be when they are put in the middle of the backcountry, away from their phone and completely offline.  This weekend jaunt was great.

Squawness

Day 4 at Squaw Valley for me reminded me of this year’s Quidditch World Cup.  The Villanova Wildcats were outnumbered and overtaken by the Middlebury Panthers (just like game #18).  The Wildcat(s) were able to hold their own, but it was the Panthers’ golden snitch, Devon Magee who ruled the slopes and the Panthers came out victorious.

Bottomline: It was a nice and sunny day of skiing with some buddies, followed by a double dip in our hot tub time machine and a great session at the Slot.  Happy Birthday Marshall.

Winter Break 2010->2011

Fortunately, the family did Christmas at my sister’s place in Jackson this year.  Being that it costs too much to fly there, I flew to Utah and stayed for a few days in Park City.  I know, it sounds baller, “Park City and Jackson Hole,” but it was budget for me.  Both places are full of old friends and places to stay.  I was able to ski 12 days over the Holiday break at the Canyons, Jackson, Targhee, and Park City.  Other then some flight issues, the family had a great time in Jackson.  Mom got to see Harrison Ford; he sat next to our table at dinner, one night.  My highlight was just doing what I love to do with some good ol friends.  I thought that I would take more pictures, but I managed to just get a few shots of footage.  Here are the clips piled together…

Where’d Who Go?

My blog went on hiatus (it took me a long time to find an engineer that could fix a wordpress issue).  I’m trying to think of how to recap the past few months.  I’ll try and do it in a few sentences….Went to a wedding on Cape Cod, went to Sonoma/Napa, went to a wedding in CT/NY, went sailing with my dad and Joe in the North Atlantic (Video: Brackish), I’ve been trying to be a surfer, but its difficult…Ski season has sorta started.  I have two days in at Squaw.  I’d say the highlight of the past few months was seeing the infamous Green Flash.  We were off shore, in between NewFoundland and Nova Scotia, and there was no land to be seen.  The Sun set and for 2 seconds there was a spectacular Green Flash.  It is in the aforementioned video, but that certainly doesn’t serve it justice.  It was one of the most memorable moments ever.  And to be with two old salts (My Dad and Capt Rich) and to see their excitement, it made it even better.  Some pics from Sailing NewFoundland:

Mt. Shasta – June 12-13 2010

Yeah.  The stoke or excitement from this past weekend is definitely still resonating.  Last week, I met with 3 guys that I barely knew.  We had one thing in common, backcountry skiing.  We made arrangements to head toward Mt. Shasta for the weekend and attempt a summit and ski descent.  As is, my week had been super stressful…but, on Friday I took the BART to Berkley and we took off.  We camped low, along the base of Shasta that night and made way the next day.  There were already helicopters in the sky, which in the mountains, its never a good sign.  The local Search and Rescue team was trying to evacuate some people from the mountain.  Regardless, we made it up to about 9,100 feet and set up two tents.  We continued up Avalanche Gulch on the south side and took a lap on the skis.  The corn snow was perfect for skiing at about 5 pm.  We used our jetboils to melt snow for water and made a great meal and went to bed.

The next morning, we knew that we wanted a late start to try and allow the snow to soften up throughout the day because of ski conditions and uphill hazards.  We left camp at about 7:45am.  Probably the most dangerous conditions that I have ever seen, were in the gut of Avalanche Gulch.  There were ice chunks and snowballs careening down the icy slope at us.  They would just hiss past your head if you were lucky.  This tweaked me out.  We had one close call and a few pebbles of snow hit my legs like darts.  Some girls the day before were telling us about a guy that got his teeth knocked out.  So, I climbed a steeper route to the looker’s right to avoid the mayhem that was occurring in the gut of Avy Gulch.  It brought some solitude and a great view.

The crew rendezvoused above the red Bluffs and we stashed our skis for the descent and rallied up Misery Hill.  Most other climbers had bailed on the summit at this point.  So, we basically had the whole top of this awesome mountain to ourselves.  It was great.  We got to the top at about 2:30….got back to our skis and skied over 6000 vertical feet back to the tents, packed up and skied down to the car.  We were all super stoked.  Anytime that you can comfortably sleep on snow and crush it to the top of peak, only to get amazing turns to the bottom of the hill…its all good.

California – Yosemite & Pacifica

Holy Memorial Day weekend…Daniel flew in to town.  Immediately, we went to a fantastic North Beach dinner with a new member to the global “we.”  It was great.  We then trekked on a four hour drive to Yosemite Valley.  Despite everyone telling us that it would be impossible to find a campsite…we got lucky.  As soon as we pulled into the park, there was a cancellation and we had a campsite for the night.  It worked out well because we would have been stranded.  The next morning, we hiked 2800 vertical feet to Yosemite Falls.  There was minimal clouds and the hike was exactly what we were looking for…the opportunity to check out and be offline.  I recommend it.

We returned to the city and crashed out hard.  Joe picked us up on Monday in his Bio-diesel VW van and brought us all to Pacifica Beach.  We all went surfing.  The waves were super mellow and perfect for the first waves of the year.  This was followed by drinks and apps at the Distillery in Half Moon Bay.  The long weekend was very needed and relaxing.

In other news, I left facebook.  So, if you are reading this…don’t worry…we are still friends.

Mt. Hood

Davu Yusef Sadr kept calling me and calling me and talking about Mt Hood.  He lives in Hood River, so he stares up at Hood whenever the weather allows him.  Dave cooked up a great idea….ascend and ski off the top of Mt Hood.  The Pacific Northwest has the worst weathermen or they have a difficult job because its nearly impossible to predict the precipitation up there.  We spent the week trying to think of other alternatives because the weather looked to be snow or white out conditions on Hood.  I packed a wetsuit to have kiteboarding as an alternative to skiing.  Many factors came together to make this trip happen.  Weather worked out, extra candidates came onboard, and things came together.

So, 6 dudes headed up for the summit at about 2 am on Saturday morning.  At a certain point, I was breaking trail.  Basically, I used this green light from the Timberline Lodge as my beacon to help me determine where we were on the hill.  The problem with that is that the lodge was below us.  It was almost comical that about 15 headlamps were following in my skin track, especially since I’d never done this before.  The sun was officially up, once we got to the Hogsback.  At this point we had to choose which line to ascend.  The Pearly Gates was the first option and after seeing a ton of snow chunks and scree falling down the 5 foot wide entrance, we opted for around the corner.  This approach led us through an unbelievable snow tunnel.  It was the coolest way to approach a summit.

Ultimately, we all made it to the top and everyone agreed that the scariest part was after that…the traverse to our ski line.  It was a no fall traverse.  We made it over and all got face shots of powder.  The ski down was perfect.  After 30 hours of being awake and a lot of smiles, we fulfilled the Sadr plan.  …Video of the trip is here.

Word of the Week

Last week, I was chatting with my friend online (FYI).  She is a 5th grade teacher and I asked how she has the ability to be online while teaching all day.  Apparently, she gets some time when she can chat, like when the kids are at recess and so forth.  So, I dared her to try and use a made up word in class…just to keep things fun.  I asked her to use the word Skadittle in class.  Its not a word, so it has to be tough to try and throw that in there.  Instead of trying to use it, she just simply wrote the word on “the board” and asked the students to try and define “Skadittle.”  They came up with some interesting definitions.  I had to choose the best definition for my made up word.  The winner received a few tootsie rolls.  I picked the following definitions…

Skadittle -  is when you run away wearing moon boots and jumping and eating skittles
This week’s word of the week is “Jolm.”  And here are some of the submissions for the correct fabricated definition of this non-existent word.
Honorable Mention:
Alexis:  A toy that a kangaroo jumps on in a zoo show
Isabella:  A type of fish that is only found in the Arctic.  These big fish only get around with their tiny fins.  Many are extinct because of this.
True Fabricated Definition of Jolm -
Sania:  A creature between a crab and a starfish that dances to any kind of music when you ask it to.
Congratulations Sania.
